GERALDINE McCAUGHREAN

Geraldine McCaughrean is one of today's most highly-acclaimed children's writers, and the winner of numerous awards (including the Whitbread Children's Book Award three times and the Carnegie Medal). She is admired for the variety and originality of her work as well as her stunning storytelling skills. Her numerous books include Peter Pan in Scarlet, Stop the Train, The Kite Rider and Tamburlaine's Elephants.

PHILIP ARDAGH Supported by Faber and Faber
Laugh your head off with Philip Ardagh, one of the world's funniest and most talented children's writers and performers, who has written more than 70 books for children of all ages. Philip has also collaborated with Paul McCartney on his first children's book and wrote the BBC's first truly interactive radio serial. He's probably best known for his weird and wonderful Eddie Dickens novels, which have been translated into 32 languages.

Come and join authors Dominic Barker and Mark Walden as they battle it out in a Heroes v Villains debate. Dominic talks for the hero using characters from his Blart series of books, and Mark selects several villains from his book H.I.V.E. (Higher Institute of Villainous Education) to make the case for the baddies. H.I.V.E. won the 9+ category in Richard and Judy's Children's Book Club 2007. Come and cast your vote.

NICK WARD
Reader in Residence

Come and meet Nick Ward, the finder of the journals of boy-adventurer Charlie Small, who returns to Oxford this spring to entertain children with exploits from the all-action journals. Nick will be talking about Charlie, the 8-year-old boy who has lived for over 400 years, and his many popular picture books, in a number of libraries around the county a few weeks ahead of the launch of the Festival. THE 8TH OXFORDSHIRE YOUTH POETRY SLAM!

Year 8s from Oxfordshire schools come together with performance poets Marcus Moore and Sara-Jane Arbury to create their own poetry in Wordshops . The best teams from each school then compete to fill Oxford Playhouse with wit, energy, rhymes and mimes. Who will be this year's champion performance poets? They will be judged on style, content and warmth of audience applause.

Short Story Competition

For the second year the Festival is pleased to join up with Oxfordshire's Primary Strategy team to run a short story competition for children in KS1 and KS2. The theme is ‘Elements’ and the entries can be fact or fiction, with a suggested limit of 100 words for KS1 children and 250 words for KS2 children.

First Prize: £50.00 Blackwell book voucher
Second Prize: £40.00 Blackwell book voucher
Third Prize: £20.00 Blackwell book voucher
The prizes are kindly supplied by Blackwell.

All pieces of writing that are considered to be of a good standard will be awarded a book token by the Oxfordshire Primary Strategy Team.
